The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 prevented the immigration of Chinese laborers. Chinese immigrants were kept at Angel Island in San Francisco Bay because of the Exclusion Act. These immigrants carved Chinese poetry into the walls of the detention rooms. Their poetry tells the story of how they were treated.
