Dead seaweed washed up on the sand is a common sight on many beaches. However, in Sonoma County, California, people are foraging in the ocean for seaweed, hoping to get it while it’s fresh, because many species of seaweed are edible, used in restaurants to make things like sushi. In fact, some foragers take a class where they learn about the different species and how to forage for them in ways that promote sustainability.
